GRAPE ESCAPE
Wine has the
magical ability to take the edge off, and now research from the University of
Houston
suggests that grapes themselves may also do the trick.
When rodents consumed a grape-based
powder drink for two weeks, they had fewer blood pressure spikes than the
critters that just sipped water. “Oxidative stress in the body may contribute
to anxiety, and grapes’ high antioxidant content may have a protective effect,”
says study author Samina Salim, Ph.D. Perfect for tense times at work when you
can’t pop a cork.

Strong
Swimmers Want a bun in the oven? Ask your guy to lay off the bacon. In a
study in Human Reproduction, men whose diets contained the most saturated fat
had 38 percent lower sperm concentrations than guys who ate the least saturated
fat. But there is good news for wannabe papas:
Men who ate the most omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon and nuts)
had the healthiest semen.
“Sperm need the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA to function
optimally,” says study author Jill Attaman, M.D., of Dartmouth-Hitchcock
Medical Center. “The body can’t make these on its own, so men need to get them
from foods.”
